Artist's Description

I was in the desert at first light when I spotted 200 wild horses across the valley through scattered patches of winter fog. I followed a snow covered dirt road to reach them. And then the entire herd started running right at me. Horses flowed like a river on my left and right. The ground trembled and snow flew from their hooves and then they were gone.
I followed tracks in the snow into a canyon and caught glimpses of horses moving up into the mountains on ancient trails. I climbed after them as the wind rose and snow came pelting down. I climbed higher and higher as the blizzard intensified and at last caught up with several bands. My frozen fingers fumbled with a camera and I managed several images before it was covered in snow. It was a day with the wild ones I will never forget - Great Basin Desert, Utah.

I had fleeting glimpses of wild horses over the years but never pursued them until March of 2009 when I noticed a...
